The young riders were expected to demonstrate commitment, talent and aspiration and required to discuss a business plan. They were encouraged to think practically about their career path in the dressage industry and were invited to ride a variety of horses to demonstrate their skills. 25 years old Theresa Smyth was the winner of this prestigious title and won £4,000 in the process . Theresa who currently works as an Assistant Rider for Peter Storr, was a student at Talland from 2002 to 2004 and 2006 to 2008 and trained with Pammy Hutton. Theresa said of her years at Talland “I taught quite a lot and it's where I really learnt to communicate and express myself. It was the perfect grounding. I have built on this knowledge at Peter's and feel like I am starting to make progress in my career now”. Theresa must now have her business plan approved by the BYRDS committee and has a variety of goals including taking her BHSI exams, beginning to take her training to become a BD listed judge and taking sport psychology sessions. Second place Richard Black and third place Natalie Banks were awarded £2,000 and £1,000 respectively. BYRDS Director Islay Auty was the vision behind the new format and was thrilled with the outcome of the event. The prize money was through generous donation from David and Penny Manning who own several horses schooled and competed by Charlie Hutton.
